OUR SERVICE can truly change people’s lives. We can help improve the complex problems of limb salvage; joint preservation; limb lengthening; limb deformity correction; bone loss from infection, tumor or trauma; and foot and ankle deformity for patients of all ages. We are excited to expand our patient education efforts, as many prospective patients and doctors are not fully aware of how we can help them.
We have helped develop and champion the Nuvasive Bone Transport Nail, the Orthospin remote-controlled hexapod external fixation system, and the RadLink intraoperative system for precision during osteotomy.
These are in addition to our extensive use of and expertise in the new Stryde weight-bearing internal lengthening nail as well as osseointegration amputation reconstruction of both lower and upper extremities along with neuromuscular robotically controlled wrist and hand prosthetics.
Among our leadership roles, Austin T. Fragomen, MD, is currently serving as president and S. Robert Rozbruch, MD, is past president of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society.
In September 2020, we were guest editors of a special issue of Techniques in Orthopaedics titled Motorized Internal Lengthening of Long Bones.
We wrote chapters on high tibial osteotomy and distal femoral osteotomy for the newest edition of Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery. We also wrote the motorized intramedullary lengthening nail for limb reconstruction chapter for 6th edition of Skeletal Trauma. These are two of the most widely read textbooks by orthopaedic surgeons and trainees.
We have expanded our service with the addition of new surgeon Taylor J. Reif, MD, who is both a limb reconstruction and bone tumor surgeon. We are excited to expand this dimension of reconstruction after bone tumor to the offerings of the service.
Our Limb Reconstruction Fellowship, now in its 16th year, trains two fellows per year. The caliber of the fellows and the competition for positions is better than ever.
