Innovating to the Most Challenging Cases

Newly appointed Chief Medical Innovation Officer Michael Ast, MD, shares highlights from the HSS Innovation Institute portfolio.

HSS HAS MANAGED a pipeline of technology projects since 1979. Today, as the division charged with helping HSS inventions reach their full potential, the HSS Innovation Institute provides rigorous support to accelerate state-of-the-art concepts and inventions through partnerships with industry, investors, and entrepreneurs and to deepen relationships among engineers, physicians, researchers, surgeons and scientists.

In December, HSS announced the appointment of hip and knee replacement surgeon Michael P. Ast, MD, as the new Vice Chair of the HSS Innovation Institute and Chief Medical Innovation Officer. Dr. Ast, an assistant attending surgeon on the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service, has extensive experience in value-based care implementation, advanced technology for surgical training and data integration and analytics. In his new role, Dr. Ast is working closely with members of the Innovation Institute team to support viable new offerings that can improve clinical outcomes, enhance the patient experience or lower the cost of care delivery in a meaningful way.
